I have experimented with a few different colours for my character and tried out different backgrounds for the title page. I found a really great blog with loads of large image files of old maps and the one I have used below is from the 16th century... true to Sir Francis Drakes time!
On the image below i have added drop shadows and a noise layer to give it an old sort of feel.
